Nextbit's design inspiration for Robin was a departure from the typical smartphone aesthetic. Instead of following the formulaic look of current smartphones, Nextbit sought a design language that conveyed a different set of values. The design was inspired by the simplicity and naivete of a traditional phone's architecture. Unlike the metal phones dominating the market, Robin is made with glass-filled polycarbonate, providing a unique and fresh feel.
What sets Robin apart from other smartphones is its revolutionary storage solution. Robin is the first smartphone designed to never run out of space. By integrating cloud storage into the operating system, Robin can archive less frequently used items, ensuring there's always space for what users want most. This smart system learns user habits and optimizes storage accordingly, making Robin a phone that gets smarter every day.
The production of Robin involved innovative technology and meticulous attention to detail. One of the thinnest phones available today, Robin's thin housing was achieved by a special mixture of hardened PC resin. This allowed Nextbit to achieve rigidity and structural strength beyond what is typically possible for a product of this size. Each housing part is hand-polished, and every detail is precision-machined to ensure ultimate fit with minimal part tolerances. Robin is then coated with an ultra-smooth finish, providing a premium sensory experience.
Robin's design process was not without its challenges. Maintaining the simplicity of the design through the development process was the most difficult aspect of creating Robin. The Nextbit team created hundreds of patterns for the phone's various elements, including speakers, buttons, cases, etc. This meticulous attention to detail eventually led to Robin's simple, playful design.
Robin's design has been recognized with the Golden A' Digital and Electronic Device Design Award in 2016. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
Nextbit's Robin is a testament to the power of innovative design and technology. Its unique storage solution and fresh design language have set a new standard in the smartphone industry. With its cloud-integrated operating system and unique feel, Robin is not just a smartphone, but a smarter phone.
